Spot 1︰Century-old Lugard Road

From the Peak Galleria, facing the Peak Tower on the left side, near the refuse collection point, you will find the signboards for Lugard Road and the Hong Kong Trail. This is the starting point of the Pok Fu Lam Tree Walk. This section overlaps with part of Hong Kong Trail Section 1 and the High West section of the Peak Trail. The century-old stone benches and blocks along Lugard Road are full of history — just ten seconds after starting, you will already see a Grade II historic building. No. 1 Lugard Road is the headquarters of the Peak Tramways Company Limited, built in 1926 and once the residence of the company’s general manager.

Spot 2: One of the World’s Three Greatest Night Views

The initial section has more tree cover and a good number of native plants. According to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, you may encounter floral species such as the Ivy Tree (Schefflera heptaphylla), Lance-leaved Sterculia (Sterculia lanceolata), Hong Kong Gordonia (Polyspora axillaris), and others.

Within about 20 minutes the path gradually opens up, revealing sweeping views of Victoria Harbour. From Lantau Island, Tsing Yi, Tai Mo Shan, Lion Rock, Kai Tak, Kowloon Peak, to Tai Sheung Tok — everything stretches out before you. The Stonecutters Bridge, Star Ferry, and more are also in sight. At sunset and as the city lights come on, the 180-degree panorama is elevated to another level — no wonder it is often ranked among the world’s three greatest night views.

Spot 3: Tree Root Arch

Lugard Road is named after Sir Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, the 14th Governor of Hong Kong. During his tenure he helped establish The University of Hong Kong, as well as the Kowloon-Canton Railway and the General Post Office. Construction of Lugard Road began in 1919 and was completed between 1921 and 1922 at a cost of about HK$145,000 — an astronomical sum by the standards of the time.

After passing a cluster of luxury residences, you walk through the famous Tree Root Arch. The Indian Banyan (also known as Indian Rubber Tree) is not a native Hong Kong species and is therefore not listed in the official description of this tree walk. The aerial roots of the Indian Banyan absorb moisture and nutrients from the air, forming a natural “arch.” Where it joins Harlech Road there is a park and toilets for a short rest. Continuing anti-clockwise, you can see Lamma Island, Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, and Aberdeen. Lugard Road on the north side offers multiple spots to enjoy Victoria Harbour views, while Harlech Road has more ordinary scenery but includes recreational facilities such as a balance beam, suitable for children to burn off energy. In summer, Lugard Falls has decent water flow; in autumn and winter it is less popular.

Beginner-level Hiking Route

After completing the loop you return to the endpoint (also the starting point) at the Peak Tower. Beside it stands the former sedan chair shelter (now the Peak Lookout), a Grade II historic building. Once you finish the Pok Fu Lam Tree Walk, the quickest way to leave is by Peak Tram, bus, or minibus. If you still have energy, you can continue along Old Peak Road, visit the City of Victoria Boundary Stone and the Zoological and Botanical Gardens, then exit in Central.

In summary, the Pok Fu Lam Tree Walk is a beginner-friendly hiking route. Whether for family fun or couple photo-taking, it will not disappoint. The route is also highly flexible — you can continue to High West, Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, the University of Hong Kong, Central, Admiralty, or Victoria Peak Garden.
