Hong Kong Trail is the most accessible and easiest of Hong Kong’s four major long-distance hiking trails. Many people manage to complete the roughly 50 km route (the actual distance is closer to 45 km) in under 10 hours, and almost anyone can finish it by breaking the route into sections. Sections 1–8 are listed below.

Ready to journey through Hong Kong’s history? You can begin at Lugard Road on The Peak and continue through Aberdeen, Wong Nai Chung Gap, Tai Tam Reservoir, and on to Dragon’s Back.
Alongside its rich historical interest, the trail also offers Instagram-worthy viewpoints and some of the most stunning countryside walks on Hong Kong Island.

Section 1: Unbeatable Harbour Views from Lugard Road on The Peak | Almost No Climbing

Hong Kong Trail Section 1 🐉 Lugard Road (The Peak) → Harlech Road → Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road

Hong Kong Trail is admired worldwide. In 2013, Lonely Planet ranked it 10th among the world’s top 10 hiking trails, noting that hikers descend from the high points of Hong Kong Island to the lowest, taking in excellent Victoria Harbour views all the way to the beautiful surfing spot of Big Wave Bay.

Starting with the harbour views from Lugard Road is the perfect beginning.

Section 2: Enjoy Fishing Village Vibes at Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter

Hong Kong Trail Section 2 🐉 Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road → Lady Clementi’s Ride → Catchwater → Peel Rise

Section 2 has many shaded paths. The scenery of Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter gives a real fishing-village feel and makes it an excellent choice for beginners and families. The route is mostly flat, and most people can finish it within 3 hours.

Section 3: Shade Around Tin Wan Shan | Small Waterfalls for Soul Purification

Hong Kong Trail Section 3 🐉 Peel Rise → Mid-slope of Tin Wan Shan → Aberdeen Reservoir Road

Section 3 follows a shaded dirt path around Tin Wan Shan. The sound of the stream washes away urban stress. Because the path is wide and not especially popular, it is also a good place for testing new shoes or trail running.

Hong Kong Trail Section 4 – Overlook Ocean Park’s Seahorse from Middle Gap

Hong Kong Trail Section 4 🐉 Wan Chai Gap → Lady Clementi’s Ride → Middle Gap → Black’s Link → Wong Nai Chung Gap

Section 4 takes you from the past into the present. The early part features Lady Clementi’s Ride, an old English-style bridge and World War II pillboxes that remind you history is never far away. Continuing to Middle Gap, you enjoy distant sea views and the distinctive seahorse of Ocean Park before joining Black’s Link and entering a luxury residential area. One trail, multiple meanings.

Hong Kong Trail Section 5 – Victoria Harbour + Tai Tam Quarry Scenery All in One

Hong Kong Trail Section 5 🐉 Wong Nai Chung Gap → Osborn Memorial → Jardine’s Lookout → Mount Butler Quarry → Tai Fung Au

Section 5 offers the easiest close-up quarry views outside Lei Yue Mun. At only 4 km, it packs in Battle of Hong Kong history, harbour scenery and Tai Tam Reservoir views. It is both the shortest and the hardest section of the Hong Kong Trail.

Hong Kong Trail Section 6 – 90% Downhill | Searching for Mayan Civilisation at Tai Tam Reservoirs

Hong Kong Trail Section 6 🐉 Tai Fung Au → Tai Tam Upper Reservoir → Tai Tam Byewash Reservoir → Tai Tam Reservoir Road → Tai Tam Road

Section 6 is short and mostly downhill, yet rich in scenery and offers excellent value. A hidden spot near Tai Fung Au strangely resembles a Mayan pyramid. Continuing to the Tai Tam Reservoirs, you will find countless historic structures waiting to be explored.

Hong Kong Trail Section 7 – Catchwater Challenge | Tai Tam Bay as Companion

Hong Kong Trail Section 7 🐉 Tai Tam Road → Catchwater → Lan Nai Wan → To Tei Wan

Section 7 is dominated by the catchwater and is generally regarded as the most ordinary stretch of the Hong Kong Trail. Yet if you set out in the right weather, there are still surprises. The sound of the waves in Tai Tam Bay, together with the contrast between the Red Hill Peninsula and the old Lan Nai Wan village, creates a unique landscape right beside you.

Hong Kong Trail Section 8 (The Best Session): Five-Star Scenery of Dragon’s Back

Dragon’s Back offers the finest scenery on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island and provides a perfect ending to Section 8. Multiple overseas media outlets have given it unanimous praise, calling it a world-class hiking route. Starting from the bus stop at To Tei Wan (around 150m elevation), you can enjoy the sea breeze and panoramic views of Shek O within half an hour.
